How to build and adapt buildings in Belgium and make sure they are flood-resilient?

   École polytechnique de Louvain (EPL)

Challenges

Global warming is intensifying flooding, causing more severe damage in Belgium. During the tragic flooding of July 2021, many homes were destroyed, demonstrating how destructive water can be during floods, whether caused by river flooding or intense runoff. Extensive reconstruction plans are being developed in the affected valleys, with an awareness of the need to build more flood-resilient buildings.

However, the lack of building codes and standards for buildings in flood-prone areas is an issue. Characterisation of flood-induced forces is thus necessary in order to develop new, appropriate building standards. The project uses laboratory experiments and digital simulations to establish a methodology for determining the forces likely to be applied to flood-prone buildings.

UCLouvain’s contribution

UCLouvain has expertise in digital modelling and hydraulic risk management, which is how it became involved in this project in response to pressing societal issues, especially given the floods in Belgium in July 2021. This project is an opportunity for the university to leverage its expertise in digital simulation and applied research, thereby contributing to the development of standards and practical solutions to make buildings more flood-resilient.

In so doing, UCLouvain improves its knowledge in an increasingly crucial field, while training new researchers and strengthening its collaboration with external actors such as Buildwise and the SPW.

The floods of July 2021 had a profound impact on Charles Ryckmans. He was particularly inspired by this project and its practical approach and concrete impact. This, and his keen awareness of climate issues, led him to invest himself fully in this project. In addition, the project was also a natural continuation of his studies at UCLouvain, and more specifically his thesis, which dealt with flood issues.
