On May 18, as every year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) invites cultural institutions around the world to celebrate International Museum Day. The theme chosen for 2025 - “The future of museums in ever-changing communities” - is particularly relevant to today's challenges.
At Musée L, we make this reflection our own. For while museums are by their very nature memory-oriented, they are also, more than ever, rooted in the present and open to the future.
“The only constant is change"
- Heraclitus
At a time when our societies are changing at high speed - between global upheavals, technological mutations and new social expectations - museums are called upon to reinvent themselves. They are no longer simply guardians of the past, but are becoming committed players in the present, and allies in building a more inclusive and sustainable future.
At Musée L, we believe that museums must be spaces for encounter, dialogue and questioning - but also for reparation.
Places where multiple voices can intersect, tell their own stories, and sometimes clash. Today, more than ever, we are committed to working to rethink the values we embody, to redefine certain spaces to better reflect the diversity of voices and histories, and to question the context and critically re-read our collections.
On this International Day, we wish to affirm our solidarity with museums around the world engaged in this transformation. Together, we have a responsibility to evolve our practices so that museums remain relevant, accessible and inspiring places for all.
