In 2021, Guillaume Wunsch and Monique Van Kerckhove donated a major collection of Concrete Art to the Musée L. Over the years, they had passionately assembled this ensemble through reading, exhibitions, meetings with artists, and contacts with specialised galleries. The collection of some 370 artworks mainly features works on paper (silkscreens, lithographs, drawings, etc.), objects and publications documenting the movement. In offering a pano-rama of Concrete Art, this donation has significantly enriched the modern art collections, with pieces by such artists as Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, Vera Molnár, François Morellet, and Manfred Mohr.
Throughout 2023, students taking part in the seminar “History of Art from the Avant-Garde to Contemporary Art” at UCLouvain were given the opportunity to study the works in this collection, to participate in the The Grid exhibition’s preparation, and work on its communication through the writing of notes on the works and artists presented in the exhibition. The eighteen entries in this publication were writ-ten and compiled by the students, and stem from the encounter between these students and a collection.
