Challenges
The optimisation of electrolytic green hydrogen production is now a key challenge in the energy transition. The aim is to replace the traditional steam methane reforming process, which is a major source of CO2 emissions. Green hydrogen which is produced using renewable electricity also offers significant potential for reducing the carbon footprint of other essential sectors, such as transport and the chemical industry.
UCLouvain’s contribution
The research of our team, which is led by Professor Joris Proost, focuses on improving the performance of alkaline electrolysers. More specifically, we are investigating the use of 3D electrodes to improve efficiency and reduce capital expenditure of the electrolyser to achieve fossil parity of this technology.
